Let me tell you about an experience I had recently helping a customer in Annapolis, Maryland. This man had recently moved his family into a new home in a new suburb close to a lot of farmland. Everything was going great until one night when they were busy arranging the furniture in the living room, and they heard bird-like noises and growling and hissing coming from under the deck outside.

The owner went to check it out and saw a raccoon run out from under the house. Upon further examination, he found a small hole dug under the deck into the crawlspace of the home. The owner placed a brick in front of the opening and went back inside. He was only inside a few minutes when he heard the noises again. He went back outside and found that the raccoon had moved the brick to reenter the hole. The owner said he was surprised at the raccoon's determination.

In my many years of professional raccoon removal service, this is a very common situation. A mother raccoon enters a warm, cozy place to have her young. It could be under a person's deck, inside their crawlspace, or even up in the attic. Raccoons are determined, especially females. It is nothing for a raccoon to tear off siding, boards, etc. to try to get in.

The kind of "chirping" noises that the owner heard are also common of raccoons. As the cubs grow up, they play and wrestle with each other to learn how to fight.

When I arrived at the home, I found that the mother had climbed up into the insulation into the owner's floor boards, just above the crawlspace. I trapped the mother out first and then chased the babies around the crawl space and caught them with a snare pole (a kind of leach with a loop on the end.)

Later I cleaned up the mess the raccoons made and removed soiled insulation. I advised the owner to hire a professional contractor to come in and replace the insulation.

Bats destroy electrical system in Annapolis, Maryland attic

It's so crazy when you think you have one problem and then it ends up being something completely different. Well, that happened to us recently. What we thought was an electrical problem turned out to be a huge bat problem.

For the last few weeks, we the lights in our bedroom and the master bathroom have not worked properly. I have changed all of the light bulbs and I know that they should be working, but it is hit and miss. Sometimes, I will turn on the light to go into the bathroom and it will turn on. Other times, it won't work at all. It is so strange because this could happen within a few minutes of each try. My husband hates it because he has to get up very early to go to work and he never knows if the he will have to shower in the dark or not.

Well, we just couldn't stand it anymore so we called an electrician to come out and look at the problem. He climbed up into the attic and was only up there for a few minutes when he came down the ladder in terror.

"Are you are all right?" I asked. "You look like you have seen a ghost."

"Lady, I didn't see no ghost, but a whole colony of bats," he said. "They flew at me when I was halfway across your room. There is now way I am going to fix your lights until you get them out of there.

And that was that. He just packed up his stuff and left.

I was in shock. There was no way that there were bats in my attic, but I also didn't have the guts to find out. So I waited until my husband got home and sent him up there.

My husband didn't get too far in the attic either before he was high tailing it out of there.

After a few days of searching, we were finally able to get in touch with a bat removal specialist in the area.

He came out and checked out the exterior of the home. He found that there were a few small holes next to the air vents in one of the upper eaves of the home where the bats were getting in and out of the attic. He installed a special venting system which allowed the bats to fly out, but they could not return.

He also cleaned up the inches of bat guano in the attic and said the bats had ruined our insulation so badly that we would need to replace it.

Just another thing that we needed! So after he removed the bats, we had to contact a contractor to come and remove the soiled insulation and replace the drywall and put in new insulation.
