Dorchester County Maryland has a large pigeon population

Dorchester County residents do not want to share their homes with pigeons.

Pigeons are building nests on my terrace between wrap a round shutter and the ledge of the terrace. We now have baby pigeons and lots of pigeon droppings all on the ledge of the terrace. The Condo I live in does not know who I should contact to solve my problem of getting rid of baby pigeons and how to make sure I do not get pigeons nesting on my terrace anymore. Ellen S.

A pigeon nesting in a pot on my balcony just had two baby pigeons. I would like to get rid of the birds and their nest. Kristen S.

On a brick pillar (about 9-10 ft high) right outside our front door, we have about 3 pigeons (and maybe a nest) that won't go away. We put an owl up there a while ago and it helped for a very short time, but they are always there and their poop is everywhere around our front door. We would like them to be removed and for something to put up there that prevents pigeons from EVER residing there again. Jennifer P.

Along with physical damage and disease, wild animals also bring along disturbance and nuisance with all their commotion and smell. Raccoons and rats will fight all night and keep people awake; baby raccoons chirp and chitter like little birds; skunk smell takes the cake, but have you ever smelled a dead animal in your ventilation system? What is the value of your bat house?

AI'm on vacation, finally, I thought as my husband and I drove our dark SUV down the arm of the Chesapeake Bay. Things had been crazy at the office for the last few months. With the failing economy, I had represented many clients as they declared bankruptcy to the courts. It was sad to see so many decent men and women out of jobs and no longer able to afford their house payments. I almost felt guilty heading to the lodge that my husband and I built with our own to hands many summers ago. It was extremely hard work, but with my husband's skills as a general contractor and his ability to direct me honestly, but kindly, we were able to work together to build our dream "getaway" home. I never thought that there would be a problem with it.

Our three boys had enjoyed the many weeks in the summer that we would spend up here when they were young. With the bay just 15 feet from the lodge's front door, our boys were excellent swimmers, boatmen, and fishermen. I sighed; this would be the first summer in many years where none of our children would be able to join us.

We arrived tired and hungry at the lodge. I unpacked the food and we made an easy meal of ham and cheese sandwiches. Then we put our things away, aired out the bedding, and finally fell exhausted into a deep sleep.

I woke up a few hours later and could hear or sense strange movements in the room. I flipped on the mini lamp on the bedside table and saw a bat flying around the room. I screamed and my husband shot out of the bed. €œWhat is going on?" I could only scream and point.

He chased the thing out an open window, but neither one of us was able to return to bed. We know the value of bats in the environment, in particular their help in eating the mosquito population, but they do not belong in our home. We had to have these bats removed right away.

I contacted the Division of Wildlife service the first thing in the morning and they told me that there was really nothing that they could do for me, but they knew of man who specialized in bat removal if we were interested. I got the number and called right away.

The bat removal specialist said he could come out, but it took him several hours because of the remoteness of our lodge.

When he arrived he searched the exterior of the lodge and found several areas in the logs where the caulking had become unsealed. This is where the bats were getting into the lodge's attic.

He was able to apply a special kind of venting trap and remove the bats from the attic. He also applied new sealants to the open areas and made sure it was sealed and tight. What a vacation!
