Bat Houses

Bat houses seem like a great idea. People promise miracle cures of happy insect eaters and no insects. The houses even look easy to build—tiny little things not requiring much material and plans available all over the internet and in books.

If only it were that easy. I am a wildlife control operator affiliated with Allstate Animal Control and get calls from unhappy people who have built and installed bat houses on their property, only to discover that the animals have taken up residence in their attic!

Once the animals are there, your choices become limited: live with the bats (which I do not recommend for many reasons) or get rid of the bats. The Division of Wildlife and Fish will be glad to hear about a healthy colony of animals, but cannot help you get rid of them. pest control companies, like Dean’s Pest Control, will refer you to an animal control operator who can help you.

An example is a large, expensive log home near Jackson, Wyoming. It is near a lake and surrounded by trees. The owners were sick of mosquitoes and had occasionally noticed bats in the evening so they put several bat houses around their property. They were very happy when they started seeing more activity in the evenings and decided their plan must be working, but when they checked the houses there was no sign of occupation. Where were the animals living?

That is when they started to notice a stain near the chimney and would occasionally catch an odd whiff of something inside the home. Sure enough, the bats had moved in—to the ATTIC. There was a small chink in the stone façade chimney where it met the roof. It wasn’t at an angle to cause a leak, but it was big enough for bats to sneak through.

Why didn’t the animals choose the bat houses? Well, would you choose a freezing, cramped apartment, or a warm, spacious mansion? That is how they feel, too. They would much rather live in an attic than in a little box nailed to a tree.

I wish bat houses worked as advertised, I really do. But, most of the time, they don’t.
If you do want to provide habitat, I would recommend it be far away from your habitat. But, rest assured that these amazing animals are very good at finding places to live. Even if you try to help them with what seems to be appropriate habitat that doesn’t mean they will appreciate it—like the old saying “you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink.” If you do end up sharing your home with unwanted guests, find an animal control operator at Allstate Animal Control. They will help get rid of the bats in your home in a safe, humane way and allow them to live free and happy in the wild.

We resolve many types of wildlife control conflicts in Teton County and surrounding areas. Give me a call if you need expert animal removal and/or live wildlife trapping. We can also perform an inspection of your property to evaluate the problem.

The situations we resolve and main trapping and removal services we provide are: raccoon families in attics and chimneys, woodpeckers drilling siding. mud swallow nests on stucco, rats or squirrels thumping and bumping around inside walls and in attics, voles and gophers destroying lawns, skunks stealing pet food, bat infestations, and snakes living in crawlspaces and stone walls.

Along with physical damage and disease, wild animals also bring along disturbance and nuisance with all their commotion and smell. Raccoons and rats will fight all night and keep people awake; baby raccoons chirp and chitter like little birds; skunk smell takes the cake, but have you ever smelled a dead animal in your ventilation system? HOA Objects to Bats in Jackson, WY

My name is William and I am the president of the Home Owners Association of a 16-unit condominium in Jackson, WY. About a year ago people started to notice a number of bats flying around the building in the evening. After a while it became obvious that the animals had taken a sort of unauthorized sub-lease of our building and were living somewhere on the top floor. How do you get rid of bats when they are up so high? How to you get rid of them at all?

We found that the bats were entering and exiting the building on the top floor through what looked like a small crack between the vertical brick wall and an I-beam on a balcony. I started calling around to find out who could help get rid of these animals.

I tried the people I already had worked with. We have a regular extermination company, but they said, "We don't do bats." I tried the local animal control, but they only take care of cats and dogs and things like that. The Division of Wildlife Control was glad to hear of an apparently thriving colony, but would do nothing to help us get rid of them. I even thought to call the people who do exterior maintenance on the building, like our window washers, but they just laughed. "You want us to do WHAT?!"

I was running out of ideas and some of the residents were running out of patience. They wanted to know why they were being forced to share space with wild animals that were dangerous (everyone knows about rabies) and smelly (a strange smell was becoming noticeable in several of the top units). We really needed to get rid of the bats.

A friend mentioned that they had had problems with a skunk once and had a wildlife control operator come and take the animal away. "A what?" I asked. It turns out that a wildlife control operator is a person who specializes in getting rid of unwanted animals that try to take over people's houses and stuff. "Skunks are on the ground," I said, "and these are waaaay up there. Will they still be able to help?"

Only one way to find out. I called Brandon and he came out and took a look at the job. He was confident that he could get rid of the bats for us.

And, sure enough, he and his technicians did. They had all kinds of cool equipment and were able to figure out what the animals were doing and how to get them out. It was great! It didn't take too long and was definitely worth it. The bats are safely off to a new home and we are no longer dealing with squatters in our condominium.
