Windowsill Raccoons in Davis County, Utah
The Wasatch foothills of Davis County, Utah are a great place to build a home with dramatic views. You can look out the windows over the Salt Lake Valley and see the lake and the lights. It is a beautiful sight.
But, that is not what these three raccoons were sitting in the window for. They weren’t looking at the lights. They were looking for a way out! When people trap raccoons the idea is to catch them and take them away. But this removal job went terribly wrong and the animals were trapped inside the house.
The owner knew he had raccoons in his attic. He looked around and figured out that they were accessing the attic through a vent they had torn loose. “Well,” he thought, “I’ll fix them.” He waited until things were quiet upstairs and, assuming the animals were out, reattached the vent very firmly, making sure the animals wouldn’t tear it away again.
Unfortunately, the animals weren’t out, they were sleeping. That night they woke up, ready to depart for an evening of foraging and play. Their door was blocked. They tried to tear it loose, which they can often do with their strong and clever hands. No luck. The homeowner had done a very good job. They started to look for another way out.
The animals became more and more agitated. Sensing air flow and assuming that meant an exit, they tore their way into the duct work in the attic. Now they were loose inside the house. One entered the daughter’s bedroom through a ceiling vent. A second one appeared in the kitchen. A third was running around the living room tearing at the carpet trying to dig its way out of the house. The owner tried to chase them out of the house and they would just dive down the heat vents and move to a different part of the home. When I arrived, three young raccoons were in the window overlooking the valley, scratching at the glass. What a pitiful sight!
We were able to get the raccoons out. No member of the family was harmed, but the clean up inside the house and the repairs to the heating and air system, not to mention the mess in the attic, went on for some time.
This situation illustrates the wrong way to trap raccoons. The owner assumed that he had outside animals that occasionally came in, rather than inside animals that made daily trips out. Blocking the entrance is possibly the worst action you can take because it disorients and confuses the animals and a frightened animal will fight. Everyone was very lucky in this home because no one was bitten or scratched or became ill because of the error.
Don’t let your current annoyance become an emergency. If you have animals in your home, call us before taking action. We can determine where the animals live and will make sure all animals are out before blocking access or performing repairs. There is a right way to trap raccoons. It is worth it to hire a professional.

Local Residents Fed Up with Nasty Neighbors in Clearfield
Several residents in a neighborhood of Clearfield are angry with one of their neighbors and want the city council to step in.
The neighbors under scrutiny are the Richins family. Neighbors say that they do not properly dispose of their trash and food waste which has resulted in the increase of unwanted animals, mainly raccoons in the area.
“Their stuff is all over the place,” said neighbor Janice Parks. “It is like living next to the city dump. It is just not fair to everyone else in the neighborhood.”
Parks said she now has a mother and three baby raccoons living under her deck.
“I think it is because of the trash heap next door,” said Parks. “They raid the neighbors crap at night and then come over here to sleep under my deck.”
Parks said the worst part is that now the raccoons are becoming bolder.
“Last evening around sunset, one came out when we were just sitting on the deck,” said Parks. “I am afraid to let my children go out and play in the backyard now.”
Another neighbor, Robert Hyman said he has also seen raccoons rummaging through the Richinses property at night and then come into his yard.
“They wouldn’t come if there wasn’t so much food available to them,” said Hyman. “I wish Richins would get it cleaned up."
Parks and Hyman approached the Richins family about cleaning up their yard, but Parks said Mr. Richins told them to “get the hell out and to mind their own business.”
Parks recently hired a local professional trapping company, Allstate Bird and Animal Control, to come out and take care of her raccoon problem.
The wildlife control operator said that the sooner he trapped the raccoons the safer the neighborhood would be. “Raccoons are very ferocious, aggressive animals. They will tear you to shreds and your pets also. A person should keep their yards orderly by picking up trash and fallen fruit, picking the food from your garden, etc., to help keep raccoons away.”
The trapper did take care of the raccoons at Parks’ place and Parks said she is going to give the bill to the Richins family.
The city council fined the Richins family for violating the city’s beautification code and plan to investigate further if the mess is not soon cleaned up.
