“Masked Bandit” Breaks Into Chester County, PA Residence

In urban areas of Chester County, encounters with wildlife are the last thing most people think about. Some wild animals like raccoons have learned to adapted and thrive in this type of environment. As a wildlife control technician I see first hand what problems can arise when wildlife overpopulate a given area.

On one occasion I was contacted about a raccoon inside a home causing all sorts of problems. It all started when this poor family returned from a vacation and found their home in dismay. Thinking they have been a victim of a burglary, the police were called to the residence. Nothing was actually was missing, but every room in the house was torn apart from top to bottom. Small prints were visible on the kitchen counter and walls which alerted the police officers they were dealing with a raccoon, a.k.a. the masked bandit.

In need of professional wildlife removal, the home owner contacted me and asked for my assistance. Once on the scene it was clear to me that the raccoon had entered the home through the uncapped chimney and was unable to find it's way back outside. I located the raccoon in a bedroom where it was sleeping soundly.

Raccoons can be quite aggressive at times so I proceeded with caution as I attempted to slip a catch pole over the seemingly docile raccoon. In the blink of an eye the raccoon woke up and charged me hair raised, growling, and very unhappy that I had disturbed his deep sleep. I quickly shut the bedroom door to contain the raccoon. While I was catching my breath the police officer asked, "Is there a problem?" Looking around at the destruction this wild animal has already caused I replied, "Just another day on the job".

I tried to coax the raccoon into a trap with all types of treats, but the only thing that raccoon wanted was to get out of the house. Then an idea popped into my head: if I can't catch the disgruntled raccoon why not just open a window so he can go free? I carefully entered the room and gave the raccoon a way out. Within a short time the raccoon found the opening and ran out, never looking back.

At times wildlife control can be challenging, but for me the biggest reward is seeing a smile on a customer’s face when a seemingly impossible job is accomplished without harm coming to either human or animal.

Squirrels in an Attic in Chester County, PA

My husband and I just bought a home in Chester County, Pennsylvania. We moved in about two weeks ago. We were up late that first night trying to organize a few of our 100 boxes. We finally got our bed set up where we wanted it and all of the sheets and blankets on. We were exhausted. When we lay down to sleep, we started to hear a lot of noise in our ceiling, like someone was running around up there. The noise has continued for several days and is driving us crazy.

The community that our new home is in has a lot of trees. After doing some research on the web about our problem, we came to the conclusion that we must have squirrels living in our attic.

We were very concerned about our health knowing that the squirrels are living up there because of their droppings and if they started nesting in our insulation. We also know that they could possibly chew on wires and cause a fire.

We contacted a local animal removal technician to come out and assess our situation. He said that we did indeed have a squirrel problem in our attic and that they had entered through a small opening between a vent and the siding in the gable of our home. He set up some specialized traps that allowed the squirrels to get out of the attic, but not back inside. He also entered the attic and went after the squirrel babies that were living in a nest up there.
