Last night I smelled skunk very strongly. There's a skunk under my house & I think she had babies. This all happened just last night. This happened about 4 years ago also. Raccoons in a vaulted ceiling in Charles County, Maryland

For the last two years, we've had raccoons living between our roof and vaulted ceiling. Somehow they dug through our roof, rippled the shingles off and got in. My family hardly gets any sleep at night from the tremendous amount of noise the raccoons make at night.

I have had two different pest control companies come out to try and remedy the situation. The first company set traps randomly in our back yard. They had no idea what they were doing. I don't see how you can remove a raccoon from a vaulted ceiling if you don't get up on the roof!

The second company came and trapped the raccoons on the roof. They were briefly successful. I saw briefly because after they removed the raccoons and then we spent a lot of money to replace the old shingles on the roof and have a mesh vent install, the raccoons came back. They just ripped through the mesh vent and got in. Unfortunately, the hole that the raccoons made this time is quite small, so it's very hard to gain access to, as it is also under a small eave.

I've finally found a professional raccoon removal technician in the yellow pages. I told him that I was looking for someone to remove these animals aggressively. The technician laughed and told me lots of customers were overwhelmed by his aggressiveness and that he was happy to hear someone would appreciate it.

When he arrived, he climbed up on the roof first thing (can you imagine that?). He used a vent trap and hooked the trap to the hole to get the female raccoon out of the small space. Then he had to cut a hole in the sheetrock above the kitchen, but I didn't care when he removed four babies from my ceiling and the contaminated insulation.

The he installed a steel mesh system and reinstalled the shingles so the animal would not be able to get back in. This steel vent covers the entire100 linear feet of roof and although raccoons are extremely powerful and rip through many things, they should not be able to get through this.

He also disinfected the area where they were living and provided some odor control to get rid of their smell. I'd recommend his services to anyone.
