Skunk Outsmarting Homeowners in Cache County, UT

I had a customer with a skunk problem who asked a local Utah wildlife agency for help. State agencies do not perform skunk removal, but when the information reached us we were able to help.

This homeowner had a family of skunks living under their backyard deck. A few months prior, the mother skunk found a small hole between the flower beds and the foundation and managed to burrow herself under the foundation. She sprayed and made their lives inside and outside the home miserable.

A few days later they were able to flush the skunk out and put concrete in the den under the foundation. A few days went by, but she was able to find a weak spot that they had missed and made a new den. The homeowner flushed her out again and counted as she went six times for her babies which were now living in the den. They made sure the skunk was gone, and then filled the den in with concrete again.

The foundation was now sealed, but she made a den under the deck again. They smelled it every day, but could not locate it. Although it was nice not to have the smell in the house anymore, they still couldn’t go outside. They tried putting rat bait chunks under the deck and they were eaten, but the skunk was still there. She was driving them crazy and they were stumped what to do to get rid of her. Someone told them that a skunk will not go into a live cage trap, and so they hadn’t tried that. They were skunk stumped.

This is where I entered the story. I am a professional trapper and in a nutshell, I know what to do with skunk situations. I received a referral about this customer from a local wildlife animal control service. I don’t know who told those people that skunks will not go into a live cage trap, but that isn’t true. We can trap skunks using a live cage-trap; it is sealed so we don’t have to worry about getting sprayed. We are happy to come out and help people take care of their skunk problems.

For the future, please don’t use rat-bait on any other animals that cause you trouble. It often causes a lot more trouble. It is just not a good idea.

We were able to come out to this home the same day and to locate the skunk and her babies, which we trapped overnight and later removed from the property. The owners were very grateful.

Raccoons in a Cache County, Utah Attic

It is so frustrating watching my poor neighbors with their raccoon problems!

I've lived next door to Jim and Carol for the last five years. They really are an amazing couple. Our three boys are about the same age as their three boys and our kids are constantly playing back and forth between our two houses.

Carol and I get together once a week to work on our scrapbooks or some other crafty project, but mostly to talk. For the better part of the past month, she and Jim have heard scuffling above their heads in the attic. Carol says they make a tremendous amount of noise and she hasn't been able to sleep for weeks. They had it checked out and there are raccoons living in between their roof and ceiling. She spends a lot of her time over here when the kids are at school, etc. She can't stand to be alone in the house knowing that the raccoons are there.

Carol told me that Jim called two different companies to come out and take care of the situation. First, he contacted a local pest control company. They came out set traps in their back yard and did not even examine the small hole in the roof where Jim said he was sure was their entrance point. How can you get rid of raccoons in the roof, if you don't get up and examine the roof? It doesn't make sense to me. The worst part is that this stupid pest control company charged Carol and Jim $200 to set up traps that didn't do anything! I can just picture some cartoon movie of those nasty raccoons tip-toeing through the yard and doing ballet over the traps all while laughing hysterically at the attempt to catch them.

Carol said Jim called the local animal control guy next. He came out and gave Jim some Urine de Bobcat and Urine de Coyote to place in the small hole in the stucco on the roof where the raccoons are getting in. This didn't do anything. They sent Jim a bill for $175 dollars and they didn't even go up on the roof to check out the situation themselves. What a bunch of losers!

After hearing Carol's frustrations with the situation, I decided to do a little research on my own. I came across the website www.AllstateAnimalControl.com and was able to get a referral for a professional trapper named Brandon.

I asked Brandon to come out and look at Jim and Carol's roof and guess what? He actually got a ladder and climbed up and examined the roof! Not only did Brandon check the raccoons' "entry," he also looked for other possible entries.

Brandon retrieved a mother raccoon and 5 baby raccoon babies without incident. He cut a small hole in the vaulted ceiling of the bedroom below the attic and got them out. He also removed the raccoon feces, provided odor-control, and sealed the roof opening.

It is so nice to have the "real" Carol back! She finally looks like she actually got some sleep.
