Bats Causing Marital Strife in Wasatch County

I recently received a worked on a call from a property owner who has an older rental property in West Jordan and wants to get rid of a possible colony of bats in the attic. He said that the home is currently being rented by a couple who have only been married a few weeks.

“The wife called me in hysterics,” the owner said. “She said she has seen three bats flying around their home at least four different times in since the couple has been living in the house.”

The owner also told me that the young wife is now living at home again with her parents until he takes care of the problem. The husband said that he wants to get the bats out as soon as possible, but he is not quite brave enough to stick his head in the attic to find out what needs to be done.

Luckily for these newlyweds, we aren’t afraid to see what needs to be done. Starting a brand new marriage is hard enough without having bats flying around you in your new home. We came over and checked out the home and found that the bats were getting into the home through different areas. The home has large vaulted ceilings above the front living room and the bats colonized above it. I searched a portion of the house’s vaulted ceiling and a portion of the attic as well and found that they had previously resided in there. They must have migrated to the vaulted ceiling area when the weather started to turn colder.

To prevent them from getting inside the home again, we sealed up the hole by the vaulted ceilings. Then we vented the bats out of the attic. We removed and replaced a large amount of contaminated insulation and dry wall to the vaulted ceiling area.

Hopefully our fixing up the home will help seal up the trouble with the new marriage.

Confessions of a Bat Infestation Victim in Wasatch County, Utah

It was really hard for me at first when I called Jake, a professional bat removal technician from Allstate Animal Control, to admit to him that I had a bat problem in my attic. I saw a few bats hanging out on the grill of our attic vent, but it made me sick to my stomach thinking that they might be infesting the ceiling above my bedroom! When I saw the tremendous amount of bat urine and poop on the side of my house, I hoped that they were just going to “go away.” Even when I turned on the A/C and was blasted with a heavy dose of Parfume de Stinking Bat, I still not want to admit to myself that they were infesting my house.

After I told Jake, I finally admitted that we needed help. “I am so scared!” I said. “I am afraid my kids will get sick or that one of the animals will come inside the house.”

Thankfully, Jake came out right away and surveyed our situation.

He confirmed my worst fears, they were living in there.

“Do whatever it takes,” I said and packed mine and my children’s bags.

I couldn’t stand to be in that house any longer. I loaded our bags and the kids in the car. I called my husband informing him he could find us at the hotel on Main Street after work and that we were not coming home until every single one of them was gone.

Two days later, my husband called to tell me that Jake had found all of the bats living in the attic and the eaves of the roof. Jake vented out them out, cleaned up all their waste, and provided odor control to get rid of the nasty smell.

“It is safe to come home now, Honey,” he said. “I promise.”

“No more Parfume de Stinking Bat?”

“No more. I promise,” he said.

“I hope so,” I said.
