Baby Raccoons in Salt Lake Chimney

During spring and summer it is very common for us to receive calls from people who have baby raccoons in their chimney, walls or attic. Of course, those babies have a mama to take care of them, or at least they are supposed to, and we usually remove the whole family together.

One day I got a particularly sad call. A family in Salt Lake City, Utah had seen an adult raccoon raiding their trash can. Being resourceful, they borrowed a live trap, caught the animal and had it taken away and euthanized. Then, the awful truth became apparent. It was a mama, and her babies were trapped in the chimney, too small and weak to climb out on their own.

This particular chimney was a challenge because the chimney was constructed with the intent of installing a fireplace, but the fireplace was never installed. The wall had been finished and from the inside of the house you would never even know the chimney was there. As I peered down the 30-foot chimney from high up on the roof I thought, I\'m not Santa Claus. How will I ever reach those baby raccoons? The babies were essentially sealed inside the house and would soon die. The owner was very upset. While a live animal had been a pest, dead ones would be worse stench, rot, maggots.

We have special cameras for these situations. They see far away, in the dark, around corners, you name it. We ran the camera down the chimney to the nest of baby raccoons. There was only one thing to do. After a series of extremely careful measurements, we cut a hole through the wall in the family room. We drilled through the masonry and got the animals out. The repair to the wall was a relatively easy one and, after installing a sturdy chimney cap, we were on our way.

Remember when you have a nuisance animal on your property, call a professional. You might do-it-yourself with the best of intentions and still have unintended consequences. Make life easier for yourself and the baby raccoons and have the job done completely and correctly.

Animals are going crazy in Salt Lake County

Residents in Salt Lake County are openly sharing their wildlife troubles, from raccoons to squirrels and everything in between.

I came home last night to my living in a wreck. The service door to my pellet stove was open, blinds and windows chewed and destroyed and a hole chewed in my hardwood floors leading to the basement. I’m assuming it was a squirrel that came down the chimney. I left windows and the front door open while searching the house for the squirrel. While searching the house I noticed small amounts of droppings in various rooms, but no damage done anywhere else. I could not find the squirrel after 2-3 hours and closed up and went to bed. I would like someone to come to my house to let me know if it is a squirrel, if it is still in the house, how to catch it, and if my family is safe staying in the house?

I\'d like to obtain pricing to remove about 4 adult skunks and a couple of baby skunks.  They are currently roaming our cul de sac and parking lot and are hanging out by the front doors of our office in the early morning.  A few days ago a tenant was sprayed and another was hit by a car.  They are a nuisance and are losing our business money.  Thank You.

There’s a dead rat in my wall, I live in an apt complex and the manager is cheap. We had roaches but the exterminator she hired has gotten rid of them. I said I have rats in my attic/walls. So he set traps. We’ve caught one last year and it was easy to get out of the attic, still on the trap. This time it’s not on the trap and in the wall. My one and only bathroom in my apt smells disgusting. It’s seeping into my bedroom and we’ve had to sleep in the living room. My neighbor said he can smell it as well now. My husband is sick and I’m feeling nauseous and I have had a headache for 2 days. The exterminator came to see if he could get the rat but couldn\'t and claimed it’s perfectly fine and not hazardous to live with the smell as long as the dead rat isn’t being \"kicked around\". I find this hard to believe since I can’t even live comfortably in the apt I pay rent for. The manager seems to think its fine and I’m complaining about something petty. I find it disgusting... anyway that’s what I’m living with at the moment. Thanks for your time.

Skunks taking over neighborhood in Salt Lake City, Utah

Local Salt Lake City residents are complaining about their new neighbors, especially their smell.

It is getting out of hand, said Tara, a resident of the neighborhood under discussion. There is a family of six skunks that are out in our yards in the middle of the day. They seem like they are unafraid of us, walking right up on our decks.

At least six houses in this neighborhood have been visited by the skunks.

One of them walked right up onto my front porch, said Aaron, Tara\'s next door neighbor. I almost expected it to stand on his hind legs, ring the doorbell and say, Oo-la-la, Voila, I am here, Peppy Le Peu. It is getting ridiculous!

Neighbors are sick of the smell. Many say they are keeping their animals inside as they are afraid they will get too close to the skunks and get sprayed. Other say they are afraid to send their children out to play.

I don\'t want the skunks spraying my children, said William, another neighbor. Like Aaron said, they don\'t seem to be afraid of us at all.

Tonight, the residents met together at Tara\'s house to discuss the situation. They agreed to each pitch in to hire a professional wildlife control operator to take care of the skunk problem.

I don\'t care what it costs, said another neighbor Jacob. I just want to see them go as fast as possible.

The residents located a professional trapper through a national website directory called www.allstateanimalcontrol.com. The trapper came and safely removed the skunk family by setting up traps.

The trapper also searched each of the neighbor\'s crawlspaces and/or duct work in the basements to see if there were any other skunks hiding out. The trapper removed the evidence of at least three dens under three different homes in the neighborhood.

I can\'t believe that they had so many, said Tara. This is one family the neighborhood is certainly will never forget.

The trappers also prepared underground fencing and did some cement work to seal off each of the homes from any skunks who may want to move into the neighborhood in the future.
