Pigeons set up housekeeping in Frederick County, Maryland homes

Frederick County residents don’t want to share their home with pigeons.

We believe a pigeon went down our vent and is now nesting in the walls. We aren't sure how many baby birds, but more than one. Possibly two or three. Megan C.

We have a feral pigeon problem. Their droppings are staining roof and other surfaces. We have tried screening under eaves however pigeons are roosting on other flat surfaces. Further screening would reduce look of house since it involves the front of the house mainly. Michael P.

We have a Pigeon problem. We bought a house that was vacant for a year and one half. We did not know the extent of the problem then. We have been here for a year and they are driving me crazy with their cooing. I have tolerated it up to now. I saw bird poop on my window and said that was it. Out they go! I am not sure what regulations are in Maryland, but I am sure they are some. We have them on three sides of the house now. I would like to see them gone and the ledges filled in to make them unable to roost there anymore. Iris H.

Bats in an historic church in Frederick County, MD

My wife and I just moved to a small town in Frederick County of Maryland. I accepted the position as minister for a budding religious congregation. We have had a lot of new people coming out to church on Sunday, but we are quickly losing them when they actually get into the building because there is a huge bat problem.

Last week during the choir's number, a bat starting flying around the chapel driving the congregation insane. Women were screaming, children were crying, and there was massive panic to get out of the church as quickly as possible. This is certainly not the type of atmosphere we need to have the Lord's Holy Spirit! Besides that, the smell in the church is terrible. It smells like a zoo, especially near the organ and pulpit.

At first I didn't understand how the previous minister could leave such a great town and even more fantastic congregation, but now I know. I think he just didn't want to deal with the bat problems in the building. To his credit, he did have bat houses installed on the top of the church. I knew that I needed to take care of this problem quickly because who knows how long all of this has been going on and I cannot afford to have bats flying around during services again. No one will want to come out.

I looked through the yellow pages and found a local man that specializes in bat removal. He came out and assessed the situation. He said that it is very common for churches to have bat problems. Bats like to be up in high areas like church steeples because the cooling and heating suits their natural habitat needs. Why would the bats want to live in a tiny bat house apartment when they can have a church mansion to live in?

The technician found the bats roosting in the steeple near the sanctuary and then applied a kind of venting system to remove them safely. Then he sealed off all of the entrances so they could not return.

Next, he put on a kind of hazmat suit and climbed up into the area above the organ. Inside he found several inches of bat guano and a few dead bats. He cleaned up all the waste and the decomposing bodies and removed them from the building. Then he disinfected the area.

He also had to kill a host of bat mites and other insects who were also living in the building. Needless to say we were very grateful and donations are up now.
