How much trouble can two little birds cause? Well, Doug and Tammy didn\'t think it was very much, until Doug ended up with bird poop on his chin and Tammy\'s entry rug was ruined and I better start at the beginning.
Barn or cliff swallows live in many parts of the United States, especially where there are a lot of flying insects for them to eat. These birds are sort of daylight bats when it comes to consuming insects. West Jordan, UT has a large insect population and swallows love to nest in that area near the river and out on the flats near the Great Salt Lake.
Swallows frequently are found in large flocks or swarms crows, geese, blackbirds but sometimes you will have just a pair. Two little birds searching for a good nesting site where they can raise their young for the summer before migrating to warmer climates for the winter.
Doug and Tammy had the dubious honor of having a perfect front porch for a swallow nest. The birds like sheltered places where their mud nests will stick. The brick just above the front door and under the porch was perfect. As the nest building commenced, the birds started bluffing an attack on these poor homeowners and their guests. The birds would fly directly at them, not swerving until the last minute. Doug knocked the beginnings of the nest down several times, but the next day the birds would start again. It became a contest of wills between annoyed people and determined birds.
The final straw for Doug was the day he walked out of his front door to be dive bombed by a bird. As the bird turned in flight, it really dropped a bomb. The poop, wet and slimy, landed right on his chin and dribbled down to his shirt. Thank goodness his mouth wasn\'t open!
Tammy declared war on the swallows the next day when she noticed that her entry rug, for which she had shopped and shopped, was now stained and contaminated with mud and bird poop. It was time for the swallows to leave!
Fortunately, Doug and Tammy called me before the nest was built and full of eggs. We were able to go to their home and end their swallow problems in a single day. We cleaned the porch and brick and applied the necessary effective swallow repellents.
The birds knew they were beat and left for a new nesting site, where, we assume, they raised their young in happiness. Doug and Tammy were happy, too. Their front porch again welcomed visitors with a great entry rug and no dive-bombing birds.

Skunks Underneath our New House in West Jordan, UT
I was so excited to move into our new home in West Jordan, Utah. My husband, Paul and I had just found the 3 bedroom, 2 and a half bathroom rambler of our dreams. Our five year old son was excited about decorating his room into his own private Star Wars galaxy and our two year old daughter wanted a princess room.
The first night we spent in our new home, we could smell a skunk nearby. I thought nothing of it and just closed the window. But the smell continued to get worse every day and we realized that the skunk was living in our crawlspace. After two weeks, we had to delay our upcoming camping vacation and call a local guy to come and take care of the problem.
He dug a trench and then filled it with wire and cement all around the house. A few days went by and there was no skunk smell. It seemed to be working, so we decided to head out to the mountains. We were gone only three days, but when we came home, our house smelled even worse than before.
We found a small hole through which the skunks were able get back in under the crawlspace. The whole house smelled terrible. We blocked the hole and my husband bombed them with animal poison.
We moved in with my in-laws for a week and then returned. It was even worse. We finally called Allstate Animal Control and they came out to take care of the dead skunks.
They crawled under the crawl space and removed the dead skunks. The professional trapper said that the skunks had got caught in some insulation. They removed the dead carcasses and the maggot infested insulation and replaced it. I am not sure how they did it, but it doesn\'t smell anymore. I am so grateful that we are finally able to enjoy our new home.
