What do you do when you need to keep animals or birds out of a big, open area? What do you do, for example, if the big, open area is a football stadium? We were called to do just such a job for a University near Salt Lake City, UT about 8 years ago.

The University had pigeon problems and they had them in two main areas. One problem was mostly cosmetic and annoying. The second threatened the health of athletes and visitors to the campus. The problems were connected and required a reasonably priced, long-term pigeon control solution.

Year by year the problem grew worse until it could no longer be ignored—the birds numbered in the hundreds. They roosted on the large sign announcing the university to the world on a major street that passes by the west side of the campus. The sign isn't just near the street, but also near a large open area used for recreation by the students and providing a steady food supply for the birds. The sign was defaced daily by the messy birds leaving their "calling-cards" everywhere. The flock had also become bolder over time and was a real nuisance for picnickers in the area.

The second problem was more serious. Pigeons had completely infested the football stadium. It is a traditional, open-air, oval-shaped stadium with elevated seating over concession areas, locker rooms and storage facilities. The pigeons nested and roosted everywhere. They were especially attracted to the large beams supporting the stadium. The seats were filthy. The vents and ductwork that serviced the facilities under the stadium were contaminated. The whole thing was a serious threat to the image of this excellent university as well as the health and safety of everyone involved.

Complete exclusion was impractical and prohibitively expensive as it would have involved a complete remodel of the stadium. The University decided that a pigeon trapping campaign with long-term maintenance would be their best option.

As birds are mobile and can come in from other areas, our plan is one of pigeon control rather than pigeon elimination. The first year we removed hundreds of birds from the infested areas. The remaining numbers of birds are so small that they really aren't a problem and people actually enjoy their presence rather than cursing the day they were created. This has worked out very well for the University and they are pleased with the results.

One of the best parts of my job is the challenge of solving each unique problem. Keeping hundreds of determined birds out of the stadium was certainly a challenge, and I feel good about being able to create a pigeon control solution that fit the needs of the University and protected the people in Utah.

Raccoon Mansion in Salt Lake City, UT

When animals pick a home and decide that is where they want to be, half measures and partial solutions will only make the situation worse. When raccoons pick a home only a complete raccoon removal and control plan will solve the problem.

A beautiful rock mansion in Salt Lake City, Utah, was owned by an older immigrant woman. Her family had owned the home for years and years and were justifiably proud and protective of the home. They were friendly enough, but had an image to maintain and didn't want people to know that they had a secret. The secret was that they had concealed raccoon problems for years and years. The animals lived in the chimneys, ripped their way through windows and vents and totally occupied the attic and upper floor of the house.

The owner didn't mind acknowledging that there were animals outside her home and even owned her own live traps. She regularly caught animals and had them taken away, but the interior problems continued. Window screens and vents were replaced, but the materials were too light and the animals easily tore them away again.

This continued for over 30 years. Generations of animals grew to maturity in her attic, and returned to raise their own young. The home began to stink and show other signs of animal damage—staining in ceilings and walls, for example. Finally, she broke down and called us and confessed her secret.

What we found in the home was amazing. The closets on the upper floor were basically little raccoon apartments, each housing or having housed a raccoon family. The accumulation of feces in the attic was staggering, even by our standards. Imagine a large dog kennel that wasn't cleaned out for 30 years and you have a pretty good idea of what the place looked and smelled like.

The problem was that trapping animals outside does not get rid of them inside. Attempting to block animals with insufficient or incorrectly applied materials only wastes money and effort. Half-measures don't work. Complete raccoon removal is necessary. We inspected the home thoroughly and found multiple access points. We set special traps that use the entrances and takes advantage of the animals' behavior. The first night we caught four raccoons and a bonus skunk!

It took a while to locate, trap, and remove all of the animals. It took a while to clean up the mess. It took a while to repair and maintain the structure so this wouldn't happen any more. But, when we were done, it was worth it. The owner who had tried to keep a secret for so long made no secret of how happy she was with the raccoon removal. Her home was again her own.
